The Sweet Adelines International, Canadian Maple Leaf Region 26 is showcasing the best of women’s barbershop music during a the “Fusion” convention and competition in Surrey May 3-6.

Taking place at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium, the event will feature a quartet competition on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, followed by a Show of Champions on May 5 at 7:30 p.m.

The Show of Champions is open to the public to attend, and will include performances by the winning groups from the weekend, as well as Vancouver’s Lions Gate Chorus — which placed second in an international competition last year — and Region 26’s Frenzy Quartet, which placed first at the 2017 International Quartet Championship in Las Vegas.

Tickets are available at the door.

Region 26 is one of several dozen regions across the globe representing Sweet Adelines International — the world’s largest singing organization for women. This is the only completely Canadian region, with over 900 members from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut. Many members also come from the Lower Mainland, including director Anne Downton, who calls Langley home.

Official judging for the competition is provided by Sweet Adelines International, and performances are adjudicated in four categories: music, sound, expression and showmanship. Regional winners earn a spot at the international competition happening later this year in St. Louis, Mo.
