The people who entered the Langley Advance Valentine’s Day Contest prove that time does not dull love.

Langley City resident Margaret Smith has been chosen as the winner. By sharing her best Valentine’s Day surprise from her husband, Werner, she wins a pedicure and bottle of wine.

“We have been together 26 years and my husband is a diehard romantic. This is what I came home to on our front porch after a day out shopping,” Smith said.

They stopped by the newspaper office soon after learning that they had won the contest.

“It was surprising. I don’t think I’ve ever won anything,” she said.

Margaret met Werner because they were neighbours in Langley and their children grew up together.

“We finally got together and it’s been really good,” she added.

The couple has been retired for 19 years, so they agree it’s “easier to spend time together.”

Valentine’s Day plans are still in the works, but they are thinking about dinner and a movie.

Another entrant, Brian Thorburn, was the one doing the surprising.

“Disappointed that I didn’t propose to her over Christmas 2000/01, my wife-to-be was surprised when I proposed on my parents front porch on Valentine’s Day 2001,” he said. “Her favorite childhood character was Winnie the Pooh, so I had placed her engagement ring on a stuffed teddy arm within a gift tin.

“Of course. she said ‘yes.’”

Willoughby’s Gerald and Chris Copeman has been married for more than four decades and Gerald sums up why.

“Valentines Day is important to me,” he said. “I met my wife, fell in love and married her over 40 years ago. She is my every dream!”

Thanks to our entrants and readers. Watch for more contests in the future.
