A new City program targets the original hipsters – those 65 and older.

Seniors can sign up for new Monday programs called Choose to Move and Activage.

“Choose to Move and Activage are unique fitness programs that enable participants to choose how they want to be active while offering support and guidance throughout the process. These programs were developed to make it easier for seniors to get healthy and continue with a healthier, more active lifestyle, for life,” said Christine Daum, recreation supervisor at Timms Community Centre.

The community centre offers the programs in partnership with BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) and the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Hip Health and Mobility.

The free, yes, free, programs are to make it easier for seniors to get active to improve health, and are aimed at inactive older residents.

Choose to Move runs Mondays, Jan. 29 to June 25. A certified activity coach develops an individualized action plan for each participant including one-on-one consultations and regular check-ins. Monthly group meetings provide additional support.

Activage lasts three months. Every week, participants meet for one hour of activity. This fun, social, and group environment is offered in two separate sessions. Certified BCRPA fitness leaders specializing in active aging lead the program.

Activage Option Functional Training #10928: Focuses on improving strength, coordination and flexibility needed for daily living activities.

It runs Mondays from Jan. 22 to April 23 from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m.

The Activage Option Fitness & Sport session (#10929): Incorporates fitness, sport and a wider range of activities.
