Langley’s high schools have taken to celebrating the holiday season by honouring the spirit of giving while still having Christmas fun.
Walnut Grove turned the entire school into a fun fundraiser for the Gator Xmas Extravaganza. Students and staff set up different stations throughout to fundraise for the Langley Youth Hub which will open in the New Year and the BC SPCA.
In addition to a talent show and photos with dogs, people could roast hot dogs and marshmallows, decorate gingerbread, carol, compete in the eggnog chug and wrapping paper challenge, watch holiday movies, make decorations and more. Games of dodge ball and doctor dodge ball were held, and proceeds from spectator ticket sales were earmarked for the youth shelter.

D.W. Poppy Secondary put out the welcome mat for breakfast on Friday. In conjunction with the community, it hosted a fundraising and fun Christmas breakfast. The Langley Lions Club, accustomed to firing up the griddles, fed a big crowd. The event was by donation with the proceeds going to the school breakfast program which feeds up to 130 students each morning.
The school musical groups provided the Christmas classics on trumpet, flute and cello. Santa greeted everyone at the door and handed out candy canes.
Principal George Kozlovic announed on the school’s social media feed that more than $1,300 was raised.
To cap the school year, the students enjoyed an assembly. Local tradition has become teachers doing music performances or parodies.
At Poppy’s Christmas assembly, vice principal Gord Yu donned an Elsa wig (think Frozen) and led the sing-along.

At Aldergrove Community Secondary, the final day of school before the Christmas break started with a hearty pancake breakfast and ugly sweater challenge.
Staff and students offered up cover versions for the student assembly’s lip sync battle. Vice principal Jason Malo couldn’t convince fellow staff to build a snowman (again with inspiration take from the movie Frozen).

Langley Secondary students spend the days leading up to Christmas break taking part in colourful activities including cookie decorating, holiday socks and hat day, gingerbread decoreating, ugly Christmas sweater contests, PD Day, and more.
But they didn’t forget the spirit of giving, with students delivering Christmas presents to the families the school sponsored this year.
