Those attending Remembrance Day services at Douglas Park should have rain-free mild weather, based on the forecast.
“It looks like it’s going to be nice,” said Kim Hilton, the City’s director of recreation, culture & community services, parks & recreation.
City staff are helping local legion branch members with Remembrance Day services.
It wasn’t certain that there would be a Nov. 11 ceremony downtown after the local legion branch was closed earlier this year.
After years of financial struggles, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 261 building closed but representatives of the branch have teamed up with the municipality to host a ceremony on Nov. 11.
“It’s to show the respect and the lives that were lost,” Hilton noted.
In the spring when the branch closed, it looked like one of the area’s largest Remembrance Day ceremonies would not be taking place, but the community can gather Nov. 11 to honour and commemmorate the sacrifices of the armed forces and civilians in times of war.
Members of the public who are planning to attend are asked to be at Douglas Park by 10:30 a.m. at the latest to allow the procession to make its way to the site and get into the many marchers into their designated spots for the 11 a.m. events. The formal ceremony begins at 10:50 a.m. and includes a flypast by the Fraser Blues precision flying team which will fly over all the ceremonies of Langley as well as neighbouring communities.
“The march will start from Timms [Community Centre] and walk down 204th [Street] to the cenotaph,” Hilton said.
Organizers noted that there will be no parking at Douglas Park. Douglas Crescent will be closed between 204th and 206th Streets and Park Avenue will be closed. People will have to park elsewhere in the downtown core. Organizers recommend parking at the Timms Community Centre at 203rd Street and Douglas Crescent.
