Eighty Years Ago

August 5, 1937

• A delegation of Glen Valley residents opposed the closures of Glen Valley and East Langley Elementary schools. The school board, which had proposed busing affected students to Fort Langley, agreed to attend a meeting in Glen Valley.

The school board said it would be willing to start a senior matriculation class if 10 students could be found. Cost of the course would be $100 per term.

Seventy Years Ago

August 7, 1947

• Plans for north and south arterial roads through Matsqui, Langley, and Surrey were discussed at a conference, attended by MLA Alex Hope and the provincial public works minister, at Langley municipal hall. The north route was to roughly follow Wilson Townline Road (96th Avenue) while the south route would be along North Bluff Road (16th Avenue) from Surrey to the Aldergrove-Bellingham Highway (264th Street).

August 1, 1957

• Councillor Eric Flowerdew charged the recent appointments of magistrates were political plums handed out by the Social Credit provincial government. Reeve Bill Poppy and Coun. Walter Jensen were also critical of the appointments of magistrate Maurice Mulligan and deputies Hunter Vogel and A.E. Roberts.

• Diane Haid, representing the Aldergrove Chamber of Commerce, won the Miss Langley title.

Fifty Years Ago

August 3, 1967

• B.C. Boy Scouts got together in Langley before leaving for the World Jamboree in Idaho. Local boys going were Bob Dornan, Barry Sheahan, and Marvin Burden.

• A young man was arraigned on a charge of hunting wildlife without a licence after he shot a cougar that had scared his mother and sister.

• Township Reeve Bill Poppy and City Mayor John Conder agreed that their whole councils, rather than a committee from each, should sit in a joint session to reach a water agreement between the two Langleys.

Forty Years Ago

August 3, 1977

• Dr. Len Sampson was named superintendent of Langley schools when Charlie Cuthbert retired.

• Three young men were injured while diving at a gravel pit swimming hole. All three dove 25 feet (eight metres) into water whose depth had been reduced to 18 inches (45 centimetres) by hot weather.

August 6, 1987

• Long term care nurses at Langley Lodge staged a half-hour walkout to press their demands for a new collective agreement.

• About 4,200 spectators got a glimpse of B.C.’s past when Fort Langley National Historic Park hosted the ninth annual Fur Brigade Days.

Twenty Years Ago

August 1, 1997

• After labouring over bylaws to reach a compromise in the mushroom composting issue that had been stinking up the local air and politics, the provincial government interceded, enacting sections of the Municipal Act to prevent Langley Township from adopting bylaws restricting farm business within an agricultural area.

• The $8.2-million design for an indoor swimming pool in Walnut Grove was modified to include a 50-metre pool, bumping the overall price tag to $13 million.
