A few friendly games of Monopoly will help refugees settling in British Columbia.
Organized by local realtor David Smith, the second annual charity Monopoly tournament collected more than $10,000 for New Hope Community Services, a refugee settlement service.
Almost 50 players – local real estate professionals – faced off in groups of four around a board, buying and selling properties from Baltic Avenue to Boardwalk.
The winners at each table got to take home a shiny plastic cup and the glory of the victory.
Alex McFadyen was one of the organizers and helped out by selling extra monopoly money during the evening. Contestants could buy more colourful Monopoly cash at a 10-1 ratio for real donations to New Hope.
McFadyen sold quite a bit of cash to players hoping to better their chances of winning.
The $10,000 mark was a big increase from last year, when the event raised about $2,000.
“We look forward to a third next year,” said McFadyen.
The event was held at the Trading Post Brewery and Tasting Room on 64th Avenue in Willowbrook.
