Several hundred people set off on the annual Langley Walk on Sunday afternoon from the Willoughby Community Park.
The 55th annual edition of the community walk covered 10 kilometres and drew cyclists and folks pushing strollers as well as a large number of pedestrians.
One of those walkers has been taking part every year since 1978, only having missed one walk in all that time.
“I came to Langley in ‘78,” said Inta Schorcht. She walked with her daughter and her daughter’s two children.
Now 87, Inta is still walking with friends, and with her daughter Ulrika Merrick.
Schorcht remembered the first walk was 15 kilometers in Aldergrove.
She’s been the oldest walker several times already, and hopes to get the title back with this walk.
Several walkers, like Schorcht, wore vests or jackets emblazoned with the cloth badges that used to be given to those who finished the walk.
Early Langley walks could be gruelling – when it started in 1963, the route often went from Aldergrove to Fort Langley.
Today’s walk included numerous water stations along the route.
There are prizes for most walkers from:
• an elementary school
• a middle school
• a secondary school
• an organization
• a family
