A pride flag raising happens at Langley City hall Monday afternoon.

The ceremony is set for 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at 20399 Douglas Cres. and the flag will be flown for one week.

The ceremony is organized by Friends of Dorothy, a LGBTQ2S+ youth group through Encompass Support Services Society, and the pride flag is to promote inclusivity.

Established in January 2016, Friends of Dorothy run a drop-in open to youth ages 12 to 24 years old, every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

“This is a group that creates a safe place for our LGBTQ2S+ youth where they can learn about LGBTQ2S+ issues, share their experiences, and support each other,” said program coordinator Phoenix Khattab. “Although supported by staff from Encompass Support Services, the drop-in is primarily led by the youth attending, with all programming decisions being the responsibility of the youth.”

Recent meetings have included resume writing, cookie baking, tacos, arts and crafts, movie nights, and medical support. The group also plans to attend the 40th annual Pride Parade in Vancouver on Aug. 5.
