Scott Carley is a grower of giant pumpkins who has entered the contest in the past.

The public can play tic tac toe with pumpkins at the Great Pumpkin Weigh In and Festival Saturday.

There will also be stations for colouring, painting a pumpkin (must purchase the pumpkin), pumpkin ring toss, and make a beaded pumpkin (free).

Activities go from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. while the weigh in runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday has B.C.’s only pumpkin weight contest and it goes by a name almost as big as the gargantuan gourds.

The Official Great Pumpkin Commonwealth and Certified World Recognized Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off Event takes place at Krause Berry Farms and Estate Winery on Oct. 7.

The giants of the gardens will start to be weighed at 11 a.m. but entrants must arrive between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. The winners are announced at 2 p.m.

Awards categories include some of the expected ones – heaviest pumpkin, heaviest giant squash, largest regular (field) pumpkin – but there’s also the Howard Dill Award for the prettiest pumpkin, and prizes for the longest gourd, giant tomato, and largest watermelon.

The event is at 6179 248th St., and entry is free for spectators.
