Langley Township elected officials were slightly above or slightly below the salaries reported by their counterparts in neighboring municipalities last year, while in smaller Langley City, council members made less.
Just-released remuneration reports from both municipalities show Township mayor Jack Froese made $126,440 plus $15,479 in expenses last year.
Figures for Township councillors (all figures rounded to nearest dollar), listed alphabetically:
Petrina Arnason: $49,891 plus $9,342 expenses.
David Davis: $47,713 no expenses claimed.
Charlie Fox: $52,719 plus $3,662.
Bob Long: $52,393 plus $13,099.
Angie Quaale: $49,891 plus $6,385.
Kim Richter: $51,793 plus $3,908.
Michelle Sparrow: $51,869 plus $4,399.
Blair Whitmarsh: $51,922 plus $5,969.
The report for Langley City shows mayor Ted Schaffer was paid $83,381 and $11,453 in expenses.
City councillors, alphabetically:
Paul Albrecht was paid $34,742 plus $7,041 expenses.
Jack Arnold: $34,742 and $1,404.
Gayle Martin: $34,742 plus $5,841.
Nathan Pachal: $27,491 plus $3,265.
Rudy Storteboom: $34,721 and $6,799.
Val van den Broek: $34,762 and $1,092 in expenses.
By comparison, the mayor of Surrey made $132,528, Surrey councillors were paid $67,000 to $73,000, the mayor of Abbotsford was set to earn $101,250, with councillors making $40,500 and in Maple Ridge, the mayor was paid $99,436 with councillors reporting amounts ranging from $40,000 to $54,000.
The Langley-area Kwantlen First Nation has not filed their 2017 report yet, but for the year ending March 31, 2016, the online report shows Chief Marilyn Gabriel was paid $98,750 plus $3,113 expenses, councillor Tumia Knott received $108,923 and did not claim any expenses, and councillor Les Antone was paid $77,450 plus $4,311 in expenses.
The same statements of financial information show the five highest-paid Langley Township employees made between $300,000 and $200,000 last year.
Senior Township administrator Mark Bakken made more than $300,000 in the year ending Dec. 31, 2016; $294,454 in remuneration plus $14,974 in expenses.
Engineering and community development manager Ramin Seifi made $264,509 plus $10,422 in expenses.
General manager of municipal administration and community services Jason Winslade made $243,795 plus $2,184 in expenses.
Human Resources director Shannon Harvey-Renner made $213,255 plus $3,279 in expenses.
Public works director Roeland Zwaag made $204,877 plus $3,656 in expenses.
In Langley City, the five highest-paid staffers were chief administrative officer Francis Cheung, who received a salary of $215,791 plus expenses of $5,520.
Director of corporate services, Darrin Leite, was paid $151,464 plus $4,359 in expenses for a total of $149,661.
Rick Bomhof, director of engineering, parks and environment, received a salary of $153,413 and claimed an additional $2,303 in expenses.
Gerald Minchuk, director of development services and economic development earned $147,890 plus $6,263 in expenses.
Fire chief Rory Thompson had a salary of $135,731, plus $5,829 in expenses.
In March, the city hired an outside contractor to review the pay and benefits it provides to non-union staff, comparing pay levels and benefits packages for all “exempt” staff not covered by the current union contract.
The last review, in 2010, found the City rates were generally competitive, with the exception of some “minor adjustments” to two positions, which were not disclosed because it was a personnel matter.
The Township conducted its last salary review in 2014, which resulted in adjustments to two “pay bands” affecting a number of non-union staff.
