Gryphon Trio, a world-renowned piano group, is celebrating its 25-year anniversary with a tour that includes a stop in Langley this weekend.
They will be performing in the Rose Gellert Hall at the Langley Community Music School on Saturday, Jan. 27, starting at 7:30 p.m., but before that they will be leading a master class for some of the LCMS students that same afternoon.
The Gryphon Trio – featuring violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, cellist Roman Borys, and pianist Jamie Parker – is one of the world’s preeminent piano trios, garnering acclaim and impressing international audiences with its highly refined, dynamic and memorable performances, ranging from the classics to contemporary.
The Saturday evening performance will feature the works of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Piano Trio No. 45 in E-flat Major, Hob. XV:29 and Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major, Op. 8, and the contemporary Canadian work of Dinuk Wijeratne (b. 1978) Love Triangle (2013).
The classical works of Brahms and Haydn are renowned for their depth, sensitivity and mystery, and the contemporary music of Dinuk Wijeratne’s Love Triangle (written specifically for Gryphon Trio) is gloriously rhapsodical.

A touch of Gryphon history
The Gryphon Trio, in their 25-year history, continues to be one of the most committed commissioners and performers of current day Canadian composers.
To date, they have premiered or commissioned more than 75 new works and frequently collaborate on projects that push the boundaries of chamber music.
The Trio tours regularly throughout North America and Europe and their 19 recordings are an encyclopedia of works for the genre. Honours include two Juno Awards for classical album of the year, and the prestigious 2013 Walter Carsen Prize for excellence in the performing arts from the Canada Council for the Arts.
The trio are currently Artists-in- Residence at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music and Trinity College and they continue to conduct master classes and workshops at universities and conservatories, as well and initiating the groundbreaking multi-faceted arts outreach program, “Listen Up!”.
Gryphon cellist Roman Borys is Artistic and Executive Director of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society.
Annalee Patipatanakoon and Jamie Parker serve as OCMS’s artistic advisors in addition to their responsibilities at the University of Toronto’s faculty of music, where Parker is the Rupert E. Edwards chair in piano performance and Patipatanakoon is associate professor of violin and head of strings.

“Deeply committed” to the education of the next generation of audiences and performers alike, the Gryphon Trio will also be offering a master class with Langley Community Music School chamber music groups, explained LCMS artistic director Elizabeth Bergmann. It’s a free class that is open to the public.
