Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for the Trinity Western University Spartans when the men’s hockey squad took on the visiting Vancouver Island University Mariners.
The Spartans’ third game of the season and home opener at the Langley Events Centre ended up 2-1 despite outshooting the visitors 43-26.
Both squads kept each other off the scoreboard in the first period but it read 2-1 by the end of the second.
The Mariners Garrett Dunlop had both goals for the visitors. Dunlop opened the scoring, tapping in a rebound from close range at 8:36 of the second period.
However, 30 seconds later, Brown converted on a two-on-one, burying a feed from Evan Last to tie the game.
Late in the second period, the Spartans were on a four-minute power play after a spearing penalty sent Ryan Coghlan to the box, but Dunlop made the game-winner.
The third period was all Spartans, but Schamerhorn was up to the task holding the home side at bay. Despite 23 shots on goal in period three, TWU was unable to move the tally.
VIU’s Mariners is a new team, playing its first season in the BCIHL and Friday evening’s game was the team’s first ever win.
The local team is 2-1 overall, having racked up wins against Victoria (6-3) and VIU (5-1) earlier this month.
TWU hosts Victoria Oct. 20 and Simon Fraser University Oct. 26.
