Old-fashioned sack races return to Aldergrove Legion on Canada Day.

On Saturday, July 1, the Aldergrove Legion at 26607 Fraser Highway invites the public to celebrate Canada Day in the Legion parkland from noon until 4 p.m.

Activities will include old-fashioned “sports day” fun. This includes a water balloon toss, three-legged races, sack races, wheelbarrow races, an obstacle course, and prizes and treat packages for participants.

A bouncy castle, dunk tank, balloon artist, magician, face painting, hot dogs, hamburgers, and cake will also be available.

Following the family festivities, adults are invited to join the Legion in the lounge for dancing and live entertainment.

There are no admission fees for any of these activities and everyone is welcome to join in.

GRANTS HELP COMMUNITIES CELEBRATE CANADA 150

Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday and in honour of the occasion, special events will be held all weekend long throughout the Township of Langley.

On Saturday, July 1, the nation’s sesquicentennial will be marked during the Township’s annual Canada Day celebrations at Willoughby Community Park and the Langley Centennial Museum in Fort Langley. Visit tol.ca/canadaday for details.

To help other communities celebrate our country’s special milestone, the Township made Canada 150 Community Celebration Grants of $1,000 available to local organizations and service clubs wanting to host free, family-oriented parties and gatherings. These three communities are:

ALDERGROVE:

As described above, on Saturday, July 1, the Aldergrove Legion at 26607 Fraser Highway invites the public to celebrate Canada Day from noon until 4 p.m.

BROOKSWOOD:

Then on Sunday, July 2, Brookswood Senior Citizens will take the Canada 150 show on the road from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A bus full of performers will start at the Brookswood Seniors Centre, 19899 - 36 Avenue, then pop up, flash mob-style, at several parks, pubs, and other Brookswood-Fernridge locations to hand out Canada 150 flags and entertain audiences with Mexican dancing, line dancing, square dancing, modern dancing, and even dogs dancing with their masters.

MURRAYVILLE/WILLOWBROOK:

Also on Sunday, July 2, Christian Life Assembly will pay tribute to our country and host Canada Day celebrations at 21277 - 56 Avenue. A church service will be held at 10 a.m., and attending first responders, military personnel, and local dignitaries will be honoured for their community service.

Festivities will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with outdoor games and activities, including a ball hockey rink, volleyball, face painting, tattoos for the children, candy floss, and a kids’ building station.
