One passenger remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a deadly three-vehicle crash on the Pattullo Bridge in Surrey Friday (Feb. 14).
Police, fire and ambulance services responded to the crash involving two passenger vehicles and a semi-trailer truck on the east end of the bridge, in the southbound lanes, at about 10:07 p.m. on Friday.
Both Surrey Fire Service and BC EHS personnel administered lifesaving measures to three people at the scene, but all three died at the scene, an earlier Surrey Police Service press release reports.
An occupant of one of the two passenger vehicles was also taken to hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
Surrey Police Service Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said Tuesday (Feb. 18) they will likely "require medical followup for a while" due to the nature of their injuries.
Houghton confirmed that the injured and deceased victims were all young men, aged 18 to 20.
The driver of the semi-truck was unhurt and remained at the scene, police said.
Several videos posted to social media appeared to show the moment the passenger vehicles collided with the semi travelling in the opposite direction.
Police are aware of the videos, Houghton added. "They both now form part of the investigation, and because that investigation is ongoing and they are considered evidence, we cannot speak to their contents."
The investigation is in its early stages but is looking at all "potential factors" that may have led to the crash including speed, alcohol and weather conditions.
"It may take some time before investigators are able to conclude what the cause(s) was," Houghton added.
The Pattullo Bridge was closed overnight Friday for the collision investigation but reopened Saturday afternoon.
A Black Press freelancer on the scene reported that firefighters used the Jaws of Life to reach people trapped in one of the vehicles.
Police are asking any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may have dashcam footage, to call Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2025-12779 (SP).
