Letter: Get to know the neighbours

Native and non-native people live next door to each other in New Zealand.

Dear Editor,

My experience of working and living in New Zealand, a sister settler nation of Canada, offered me the opportunity to reflect on the differences and issues of injustice present in both countries.

New Zealand has never instituted the reserve system. Maori people do live next door to the dominant culture. This affords the necessity for the settler and later immigrants to get to know their neighbours and come to terms with their own prejudices. It’s not perfect society. None are, but on this area, I think NZ has it right. My Maori neighbours were nice folks.
