Creating a home cooked meal with your family could earn you $1,000 in prizes.

Better Together’s Hands-On Cook-Off contest is once again accepting video entries showing two or more people preparing a recipe together — and having fun — from now until May 16.

Co-created by Sydney Massey, BC Dairy Association’s director of nutrition education, the Hands-On Cook-Off contest is Better Together’s reminder to families all over B.C. to make room for the time-honored tradition of sharing family meals.

Better Together is a partnership between the BC Ministry of Health and BC Dairy Association to promote people sharing their stories and tips around eating together.

According to research by the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, eating family meals — particularly during the teen years — can help develop highly beneficial habits that last a lifetime, Better Together said in a press release.

These habits include having more frequent family meals, choosing healthier foods at home, eating fewer meals in front of the TV and valuing their own participation in family meals.

The contest inspires teens and kids to learn how to cook together and brings families together to participate in creating more family meals and healthier eating habits for generations to come.

Video entries will be judged by a panel of experts who will determine a grand prize winner and a runner up winner in both the multigenerational and youth categories. Videos with the most votes will win the People’s Choice prizes.

Multiple cash prizes up to $1,000 will be awarded in both categories to individuals and schools. Total prizes up for grabs are valued at more than $4,000.

Videos must be no longer than three minutes in length and can be entered online at www.bettertogetherbc.ca/contest.

For the first time this year, there is also a photo entry option. People can enter their recipe with a photo for a chance to win $400. Click here to enter.
