Planning for a healthy and wealthy future

A number of local organizations are offering a free workshop on planning for the future in both health and finances

A number of local organizations are offering a free workshop on planning for the future in both health and finances.

Focusing on topics of advance care planning, estate planning and charitable giving, the workshop is about starting the conversation — no matter a person’s age or stage — and getting informed to make decisions before they need to be made.

This day-long workshop is being held on Wednesday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Douglas Recreation Centre, 20550 Douglas Cres.

In the morning, Cari Hoffmann, project co-ordinator for advance care planning with Fraser Health, will discuss the concept of advance care planning and substitute decision making for health care decisions.

Planning ahead before a health crisis should be common practice, yet less than 50 per cent of Canadians have had a conversation with their family and friends, and even less have spoken with their doctor.

With April 16 National Advance Care Planning Day, the aim of this session is to encourage people to get informed and start the conversation. More information is available at www.advancecareplanning.ca.

In the afternoon, Tanya Lyn Werk, wealth manager with Investors Group Financial Services Inc., will speak on estate planning, charitable giving and other important financial decisions to consider when planning for the future.

Today’s executor is pulled in every direction with an overwhelming duty at hand. Werk will provide an interactive, hilarious approach to the seriousness of getting in line with assets.

Topics will include executor duties, documentation, blended families, charitable giving, jointing assets, final wishes and probate.

Then it’s the audience’s turn to ask questions. The sessions will be followed by a Q&A with a panel of experts in accounting, law, financial planning and advance care planning and resources.

This workshop is hosted by a number of local Langley-based organizations including: the Langley Hospice Society, Langley Care Foundation, Langley Seniors Resource Society, Langley Animal Protection Society and Stepping Stone Community Services Society.

The workshop is free, but RSVP is required (seating capacity is 100 people). Lunch is available by donation.
