Musicians perform 'pocket' symphonies

Langley music school hosts last Rose Gellert Hall concert of the season next Saturday night

Four world-renowned musicians will share a concert to remember at Langley Community Music School’s (LCMS) next weekend.

The dynamic Bergmann Piano duo will be joined by artists Jasper Wood and Sungyong Lim for an evening with one of the greatest hits of classical music.

On Saturday, May 3, starting at 7:30 p.m., the group’s diverse program will feature a "pocket"’ version of Beethoven’s classical masterpiece, the "5th Symphony," for one piano, four hands, a violin and a cello.

"The Hebrides Overture" by Mendelssohn, a selection of Brahms Hungarian dances, and additional works that celebrate the splendid and rich combination of strings and piano will also be performed, with Kodaly’s Duo for violin and cello rounding out the program, Bergmann noted.

“My husband Marcel and I are delighted to be performing this concert with our good friends and colleagues,” she shared. “This will be a fabulous evening to enjoy some of your favourite pieces and perhaps discover something new.”

Marcel and Elizabeth, who make up the renowned Bergmann Piano Duo, have garnered an international following through their duo recital, as well as with a multitude of ensembles and orchestras across the globe.

The pair are known for bold performances of both classical and popular music, and for often treating the audience to an original composition and/or arrangement by Marcel – who is also LCMS’ composer-in-residence.

Wood’s reputation for his  violin performances as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician has taken him to major cities worldwide. He serves as the associate director, chair of the string division, and professor of violin and chamber music at the University of British Columbia.

Lim has become the much-applauded leader of the internationally acclaimed Borealis String Quartet.

The cellist is in-demand as a soloist, collaborator and teacher. As a philanthropist, he and the quartet devote their time to audiences who are less fortunate as part of the Health Arts Society and Concerts in Care.

Bergmann welcomes the community to join them for what will be the final concert of the season for LCMS’ popular Saturday evening Rose Gellert Hall series, one of several professional concerts hosted by the school from September through June.

She also invites everyone to join them for some of the exciting free events and concerts that are taking place at LCMS as part of the school’s annual community day weekend, coming up.

“And, be sure not to miss the Concerts Cafe Classico series finale with flutist Paolo Bortolussi and pianist Dr. Corey Hamm on Sunday, May 2 at 2:30 p.m.,” she concluded.

Tickets are available by calling the box office at 604-534-2848 or purchase tickets online at Eventbrite. The Langley Community Music School, and its Rose Gellert Hall, are located at 4899 207 St.
