This year's Canada Day drone show will be enhanced with an extra $23,000 in funding to more than double the number of drones involved.
Last year, the Township decided not to hold a fireworks display, which have taken place in some years, and instead go with a display of brightly-lit drones for its Canada Day festivities.
The drones are quieter, and don't alarm pets like dogs and cats.
This year's display was approved in February as part of the $90,000 budget for the total Canada Day events, with 125 drones. Township staff came back to the council to ask about upgrading that display to 300 drones, which will allow for more elaborate three-dimensional shapes being formed.
That requires an additional $23,000, bringing the total bill for Canada Day events to $113,000. The extra money comes from a council contingency fund.
Most. Township council members expressed support for the change. The vote to spend the extra money was 7-2, with Mayor Eric Woodward and Coun. Rob Rindt opposed.
This year's Canada Day events will take place at McLeod Athletic Park, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on July 1.
