Fort Langley creative society opens 48-hour film contest

Challenge weekend is Friday to Sunday, Feb. 9 to 11

A Langley-based film society is inviting filmmakers across the Lower Mainland to make a movie within 48 hours for the annual Fort Flicks 48-Hour Film Challenge.

Hosted by Creative Compass Society, the Fort Flicks challenge can be a filmmaker’s entry to the Fort Langley Film Festival. Each participating team has 48 hours from Friday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. to write, film, and edit a five-minute film on a specific theme set by the organizers.

While all entries will be screened the following week on Friday, Feb. 23, at the Gala Awards evening, only the winning short film will be featured at the film festival on the following day.

The winning film will be screened alongside short documentaries and feature submissions from award-winning independent filmmakers from across Canada.

At the time of the launch, the hosts will release a package highlighting the theme and around three props that each team will have to incorporate in their films.

The idea behind the package is to ensure that no team is pre-filming their content, said Brigitte Seib, president of Creative Compass Society. She founded the Creative Compass Society along with her son, Tyler Seib.

“We currently have five returning teams, and would like to challenge the community to come out and join the fun – and make a film while they’re at it,” she said.

Seib added that she always looks forward the kickoff event the first night of the festival, when the challenge films are screened.

The early bird deadline to register a team for $45 ends tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 31, but people interested can register right up until Feb. 8 for $60.

Tickets and the full schedule for the festival will be available after Thursday, Feb. 1.

“Come out and join these talented filmmakers in networking opportunities throughout the festival weekend,” Seib cheered.
