Members of the Langley-based Thunderbird Fast Draw Club won three events at the world six gun quick draw championships in Forest Grove, Oregon Aug. 18-20.
Aldergrove’s Nicole Franks won both the women’s thumbing championship and the women’s open, while Langley’s Shawn Murphy won the men’s open title.
According to the fastdraw.org site, a “thumbing draw” is a one-handed draw, “where the thumb of the gun-hand cocks the hammer while the gun is being drawn from the holster. When the gun comes in line with the target the index finger pulls the trigger to fire the gun.”
Thunderbird, which operates out of the Langley Rod and Gun Club in Brookswood, has been in existence since 1959, holding fast draw events and contests throughout most of B.C. and in Washington State.
The next World Fast Draw Association contest is scheduled to take place in Oklahoma near the end of September.
Before that, the LGRC will host it’s annual Family Fun Day located at 3854 208 St. on Sunday, Sept. 10.
Visitors can learn to try out fast draw, along with airguns, archery, trap and skeet shooting with shotguns as well as doing some indoor .22 shooting with rifles, all in a supervised environment.
All events are free, but attendees are asked to bring a donation for the Langley Food Bank.
Family Fun Day runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a free lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that includes hamburgers, hot dogs, and corn on the cob.
“You can miss a few targets, but you don’t want to miss this event” remarked Den Robinson, the fast draw director, Langley Rod and Gun Club.
All ranges will be closed to member shooting on Sunday for the special event.
