5 easy steps for at-home care of your hearing devices

Your home isn’t the only thing that needs spring cleaning - Give your hearing aids a refresh, too!

“Taking a few moments to clean and dry your hearing aids can make all the difference in sound quality when it matters most,” says Kim Galick, owner of Ears Hearing Clinic in Langley.

As spring ushers in warmer weather and longer days, it’s a perfect time to freshen up your routine - and that includes giving your hearing aids a little extra TLC.

“Just like our homes benefit from a spring cleaning, hearing aids benefit from seasonal maintenance too,” says Kim Galick, owner and registered hearing instrument specialist at Ears Hearing Clinic in Langley. “Spring cleaning your devices can help improve performance and extend their lifespan.”

Why spring maintenance is important

Throughout winter, hearing aids are exposed to fluctuating temperatures, moisture, and frequent use of hats and scarves, which can lead to lint and dust build up - all of which can impact their performance.

“In the spring, we tend to be more active outdoors, which means our hearing aids are exposed to more sweat and humidity,” Galick explains. “Taking time now to clean and dry them properly ensures you get the best sound quality when you need it most.”

Easy steps for spring cleaning your hearing aids

  1. Wipe them daily: Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe down your hearing aids each night. This removes oils, wax and debris that may have built up during the day.
  2. Check the wax filters: “Wax is one of the most common culprits of hearing aid issues,” Galick notes. “Replacing the wax guard or filter regularly prevents blockages and sound distortion.”
  3. Inspect the tubing and domes: For behind-the-ear devices, inspect the tubing for cracks or moisture build-up. “If you see any signs of wear, book a quick check-up with your hearing provider,” Galick recommends.
  4. Invest in a drying kit: Spring’s humidity can take a toll. A hearing aid dehumidifier or drying kit helps remove moisture overnight, keeping the internal components in top condition.
  5. Schedule a professional clean and check: While at-home care is essential, Galick encourages clients to book regular appointments. “A professional cleaning not only keeps your devices working properly, but also gives us a chance to make any necessary adjustments,” she says.

Better performance, longer lifespan

With proper maintenance, hearing aids can deliver better sound quality, fewer repairs and a longer lifespan.

“Your hearing aids are more than just devices - they’re essential to staying connected to the people and moments that matter most,” Galick says. “With a little seasonal care, you can keep them performing their best and protect the investment you’ve made in your quality of life.”
