A career with BC Corrections' Adult Custody Division offers stability, growth and the chance to make a positive impact on individuals and communities.

Embarking on a career with BC Corrections' Adult Custody Division is more than just a job; it's a fulfilling journey for those with a genuine interest in contributing to their community.

Steve DiCastri has spent more than 30 years with BC Corrections, embarking on his career in 1986 with the aim of building a stable, rewarding career to support his growing family. Over the decades, the organization has offered both benefits and career growth, he notes, but also a chance to make a real difference in people's lives.

Over the years, DiCastri has served as a Warden at multiple correctional centres, held supervisory and management positions and participated in training and strategic planning. His dedication to improving correctional centres across B.C. underscores the significant impact corrections work can have on individuals in custody, communities and colleagues alike.

Today the Division's Deputy Provincial Director, DiCastri notes that "a career with BC corrections is not just about enforcing rules; it's about making meaningful changes in people's lives and contributing to a safer community."

Transformative Experiences

The provincial corrections division offers a stable and dynamic work environment, excellent benefits and numerous opportunities for professional and personal growth, but it's a chance to help someone along the path to a better future.

Correctional professionals often find themselves supporting individuals through difficult times, including mental health struggles, addiction issues and personal loss, for example. These experiences have shaped DiCastri understanding of empathy and the importance of positive interactions: a single positive comment or action can significantly influence someone facing hardships.

While some days can be challenging, the camaraderie and support within correctional centres is unparalleled, and is augmented by ongoing training and skill development, DiCastri says.

He encourages anyone considering a career with BC Corrections to reach out to provincial recruiters to learn about the opportunities available. Careers here encompass a wide variety of roles, including many that cater to various interests and skills, helping people change for the better or working as part of a team.
