If you regularly work with noisy equipment or share a bed with someone who snores, you’ve probably tried those cheap orange earplugs from the hardware store. They’re certainly affordable, but they’re not very effective. That’s why Kim Galick offers custom ear defenders at Ears Hearing Clinic in Langley.
3 reasons to get custom earplugs
- They’re comfortable.
- They’ll stay in your ears.
- They block more noise
“Hearing loss affects 10 per cent of all Canadians, and it doesn’t just happen in seniors. Noise-induced hearing loss can happen at any age,” Kim says.
When you’re exposed to a noise that’s too loud, too close or too long, the hair cells in your inner ear can be damaged. That affects their ability to pick-up and transmit sound to your brain, and can result in noise-induced hearing loss. Reducing or preventing noise-induced hearing loss can mean taking a break from noisy tasks, standing farther away from loud machines, or getting fitted for custom ear defenders.
Ear defenders for swimming, sleeping and musicians
“Noise-induced hearing loss can happen with a single exposure to a loud noise, but more commonly damage occurs with repeated exposures over a period of time,” Kim says. “Even vacuuming can cause permanent hearing damage!”
Getting custom ear defenders from Ears Hearing takes about 10 days — Kim will take impressions of your ear, then send them to the lab for production.
“Custom ear defenders can last several years provided that they are looked after. When you’re ready for a new pair, we’ll take new impressions to ensure an updated fit.”
And they’re not just for musicians or people working with chainsaws. Ears Hearing also makes swimming molds from a soft, 100 per cent floatable silicone that creates a tight seal to make sure no water enters the ear. If you need to block noise at night or while travelling, custom sleeper molds are made from soft medical grade silicone for the most comfort.
