Janice Papp, who recently joined the CBM Lawyers team in Langley, appreciates the firm’s community focus.

After practicing law for 30 years, Janice Papp still feels fortunate every day to pursue her passion.

“I wanted to be a lawyer since I was about 13 years old. Even at that age I think I recognized the diversity the law offers,” says Papp, the most recent member of the CBM Lawyers legal team. “Most importantly, I think, is that it’s a career where you’re always learning.”

The power of a like-minded team

Originally from Calgary, Papp moved to the Lower Mainland in 2011, and after years as a solo practitioner, relished the idea of working with a firm of like-minded lawyers and staff.

“I feel that I’ve come to a place I know is going to support me and encourage me as a lawyer,” she reflects.

Papp had several cases involving CBM when she first began practicing in BC; since many of those lawyers and staff remain with CBM today, “that told me they have very little staff turnover, meaning it’s a great place to work,” says Papp, who currently focuses on real estate, estate planning and family trusts while helping on the business side as well.

“Already I know I enjoy working with like-minded people and achieving positive results for clients,” Papp says. “I feel I help people, and that’s something I’ve always been drawn to.”

A company built on community

“Another big reason I wanted to work with CBM is the incredible role they play in the community,” Papp says. “They’re not just sponsoring or donating; they have created a culture realizing the importance of giving back to the community.”

Beyond corporate-level support, CBM staff also get involved in various community initiatives, such as Jeans Day in support of BC Children’s Hospital. Among the many organizations the firm has worked with over the years are the Big Brothers and Sisters of Langley, C.A.R.E.S. Cat Shelter, Langley, Fort Langley National Historic Site, Langley Animal Protection Society, SPCA, Special Olympics, UBC Allard School of Law Student Legal Advice Program and more.

Animal rescue is an area particularly close to Papp’s heart. “I have a number of dogs and cats that have been rescued – I appreciate being able to help those that can’t help themselves,” she says.

Horseback riding and running also help ensure a work-life balance, and with three marathons and a dozen half-marathons under her belt, Papp knows she’s come to the right place.
