Summer tips for a healthy smile
- Limit sugary foods and drinks. Popsicles, ice cream, lemonade, soda… it’s easy to lose track of all the sugary foods and beverages your child enjoys during the summer. “Plaque bacteria rely on sugar to produce acids that attack your tooth enamel. Once the protective enamel is damaged, cavities may form. Limiting your sugar intake can help reduce damage,” Dr. Basij says. Remember to brush twice a day to help remove harmful bacteria, and try using a straw to reduce the amount of sugar that contacts your teeth.
- Stay hydrated. Drinking lots of water has many benefits, including helping the body produce saliva. “Saliva helps wash away plaque, and is an important part of oral health,” Dr. Basij says.
- Keep brushing when you travel. Try not to let your daily oral hygiene routine slip while you’re on vacation. Protect your toothbrush in your suitcase, and let it air dry when you get to your destination — bacteria thrives in damp environments.
- Plan ahead. Keep up with regular dental visits to avoid emergencies, and establish a relationship with your dentist. If your child slips at the pool or playground and chips a tooth, arranging emergency dental care is a lot easier and less stressful with a dentist you already know.
