Tom Morrison began his post-secondary career as a track and field athlete, studying archaeology, with his sights set on the Olympics. After injuries ended his athletic pursuits, Morrison received a home brewing kit as a gift from his fiancé. He was hooked.

So, when Kwantlen Polytechnic University debuted a new diploma in brewing and brewery operations, and constructed an instructional brewing laboratory at the Langley campus, there was no doubt Morrison was interested.

“I learned a lot from the instructors and to me that was one of the draws. They have such a varied degree of history and experience” says Morrison.

The unique diploma is the only one of its kind in the province, and one of only three in Canada. Blending the science and production of beer with the business of brewing, the diploma’s curriculum was developed in consultation with the BC Craft Brewers Guild and brewmasters throughout the province.

Now employed at Red Truck Brewing, Morrison recently debuted his first recipe for Red Truck at the BC Hop Fest.

An active and up-and-coming brewer, he notes that “brewing isn’t perfect. Nobody’s right. Nobody’s wrong. Brewing is just a set of compromises that you adapt to and that’s really the beauty of it.”

Explore the beauty of the brewing lab, and the rest of KPU’s Langley campus, at the upcoming Langley Open House on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Check out the labs, meet students and faculty, and score some great swag. You could even walk away with a free tuition waiver! The free, family-friendly event runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Langley campus — 20901 Langley Bypass.
