Another do-over for Aldergrove McDonald’s

Restaurant chain agrees to alter criticized redesign
Council Agenda for Public Hearing
Aldergrove McDonald's has agreed to go back to the drawing board after Township council did not like the look of their renovation designs.

The planned overhaul of the Aldergrove McDonald’s restaurant will be altered in the wake of criticism by a Langley Township councillor who called it “ugly.”

On Monday, Township staff told council the iconic fast food chain has agreed to make some changes to the renovation plans that will, hopefully, be a better fit.

The architect’s renderings of the proposed new exterior became an issue after the company applied for a development permit to renovate the exterior of its restaurant at 26360 Fraser Hwy.

Stantec Architecture Ltd.’s application on behalf of McDonald’s met the industrial designation and development permit guidelines of the Aldergrove Community Plan, but did not please Councillor Kim Richter.

“I don’t know if it’s my eyesight, but I think it’s ugly,” she said when the plan came before council.

“It may work for McDonald’s, but Aldergrove has to live it,” Richter added.

“It does seem a little out of place,” Mayor Rick Green agreed.

Planning director Ramin Seifi said the existing guidelines “are old and fairly broad-based,” especially in terms of colour and materials for the exterior.
