Carjacker takes vehicle with baby in back

A carjacker who stole a car with a baby in the backseat was pursued by Surrey RCMP after an incident that began in the Clayton Heights area.

At about 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, police were called out for reports of a man with a gun near 186th Street and Fraser Highway.

Officers were still en route when callers reported that the same man had apparently stolen a Toyota pickup truck, with a woman inside.

The suspect fled the area in the pickup, but didn’t get very far. The Toyota and several other cars collided near Fraser Highway and 68th Avenue.

The man got out of the truck and immediately took a Ford Escape, with a baby still in the back seat.

Every available Surrey RCMP unit descended on the area searching for the car and child, said Cpl. Bert Paquet.

It was found within minutes, with the baby still inside. The child has been reunited with his mother and is apparently unharmed.

A gun was found in the abandoned Toyota pickup, Paquet said.

According to media reports Tuesday afternoon, RCMP had a suspect in custody.
