A local church is inviting the community to take part in a meditative walk around their new outdoor addition that was built last spring.

An outdoor labyrinth was installed at St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church in Aldergrove last May, and the church is hosting an interfaith labyrinth walk on Nov. 18.

St. Dunstan’s associate director Lorie Martin, explained a labyrinth is originally “a tool for prayer whereby a person follows a path in prayerful silence to a centre.”

But prayer and spirituality are not necessary to enjoy the labyrinth.

“It’s a grass path so you walk on the Earth. When you come to the centre there’s a pause place to sit on the grass and meditate if you want. You can’t get lost on a labyrinth, it’s not a maze. A labyrinth is to help you find your way into peace,” Martin explained.

She added many people use it as “a simple walk to a centre in silence to help the mind find peace in anxious thoughts.”

So far, the reaction to the labyrinth has been ‘mixed’ according to Martin.

“We’ve had the people who know what a labyrinth is, [and] are so excited to have one in the area. But then there’s people that are like ‘okay, this is weird.’ So both excitement and caution. But the children love it. It’s a sacred prayer walk but also a practical life walk.”

Everyone is invited to walk the labyrinth and it’s open all day, every day.

The interfaith labyrinth walk is on Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. followed with refreshments.

The labyrinth is located at 3025 264th St.
