Langley City council voted Monday to implement a policy whereby only service dogs are permitted inside civic facilities. The move comes after staff informed council they have received complaints of people bringing their dogs to the new Timms centre and allowing the animals to run off-leash around the track.

Langley City council unanimously passed a bylaw on Monday to ban animals from public facilities.

This ban will apply to all City recreation centres, including the new Timms Community Centre.

Chief administrative officer Francis Cheung said this new rule came about as a result of several complaints from patrons of the new running and walking track at Timms.

“We are actually seeing people that just bring the dogs in and they let them off leash around the track. And some of the patrons were concerned that the dogs were running all over the place and barking,” said Cheung.

He said the dogs could also pose a tripping hazard.

The ban, which does not apply to service animals, came into effect immediately after the fourth and final reading of the bylaw on Monday.
