Diversity recognized at International Festival gala

Awards handed out in three categories during the second annual celebration of multiculturalism in the Langleys

The International Festival’s gala dinner and awards ceremony took place on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Langley International Festival Society’s second annual Multicultural gala dinner and awards ceremony, held on Saturday was a big success, both in terms of attendance and nominations, say organizers.

Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese along with four councillors, and Langley City Deputy Mayor Jack Arnold took part in the celebration of diversity in the Langleys.

The society received 16 nominations in three categories — Innovative Projects, Spirit of Diversity, and Ambassador of Diversity.

Muriel Arnason Library was awarded top spot in the ‘Innovative Projects’ category for its outstanding contribution to diversity in the community. Muriel Arnason Library is a part of Fraser Valley Regional Library, and provides services and programs to all ages and all cultures.

It organizes many multicultural events including Chinese New Year, Diwali, Christmas, United Nations Human Rights Day, Women’s International Day, and many more, and participates in several community events.

Spirit of Diversity award was given to Langley Community Services Society for its numerous multicultural services and programs to families especially to immigrants, refugees, and ethnic minorities and helps them in their adjustment and transition to the new community. LCSS services include a Drop-in-program, community events and outings, and ESL classes.

Brandon Gabriel was awarded Ambassador of Diversity for demonstrating significant leadership in the community. Based in Langley, Brandon is an accomplished artist. His art is included in collections in many countries and has competed in mural competitions around the world.

The Gala Dinner, emceed by Mike Robinson, was sponsored by TD Canada Trust.
