On Saturday, March 26 at 8:30 p.m., people around the world are encouraged to turn off their lights for Earth Hour 2011 and help raise awareness of global climate change.
Rhys Griffiths, member of the Langley City Parks Foundation, says it’s a chance to encourage people to be less wasteful with their energy.
“It’s an opportunity to let people think about the value of our electricity, especially with costs rising,” he said.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and has grown to reach 128 countries in only three years.
An estimated 10 million Canadians took part last year, according to World Wildlife Fund Canada.
Griffiths says he did a drive through Langley City last year and was disappointed in the number of businesses he saw with their exterior lights still on.
He hopes more businesses will opt to turn off their lights this year.
