1- What is the most important issue facing the Township, and how would you propose to deal with it?
The election of mayor and council on November 15th.
Of all the community-based issues that are occurring in Willoughby, Brookswood, Fort Langley, Aldergrove, the commonality is that Council has not truly involved the citizens in the planning process. The consultations that they have done, have been token at best.
In addition, current mayor and council are so pro-development that they have forgotten about the people side of building neighborhoods. Poor planning and vision have resulted in negative impacts on our children and families with schools, public safety, recreation and other issues that revolve around bringing in thousands of new people to our municipality "unannounced."
2 - Should there be restrictions on development in Willoughby until the situation regarding funding for new schools has been resolved?
Without a doubt.
The current pace, and scope of development in Willoughby has created, and will continue to create serious problems with education, safety, traffic, transportation, and other services.
Willoughby is probably the worst example that I have ever seen of poor planning. The story here is not just the poor decision-making, but the impact on people. I both admire, and empathize with the residents of Brookswood who have rallied together to ensure that the same council does not tear their community apart.
3 - Do you support a pool and recreation centre complex in Aldergrove, and if so, when should construction begin? If not, why not?
Given a long career working in Recreation for the City of Vancouver, and in the School District, I quickly realized a few things. Aldergrove has been under-served, and all of its residents will benefit from enhanced recreation services for all ages. I also question why Aldergrove-based councillors like Fox, Long, Dornan, and Mayor Froese have not represented the residents of this area and pushed for these services a long time ago.
Construction should begin as soon as possible!
4 - What type of development, if any, should be encouraged in a new community plan for Brookswood and Fernridge?
I would like to see minimal changes to a new OCP so that the unique nature of this community remains intact. This includes solidifying a tree bylaw for Brookswood/Fernridge, more places to gather, more play areas for families. Ultimately, the community needs to provide the input for the new OCP. Given the amazing way residents have rallied together, I don't see this as an issue. We just need new councillors who value, and respect residents, and will ultimately listen to the people. Vote in those that you feel will do this, and vote out those who have been part of the "chaos" in communities throughout Langley. It's sad.
