Election 2015: Four Langley all-candidate meetings set for coming week

Seniors issues will be front and centre during pair of afternoon meetings

Seniors issues will be front and centre at all-candidate meetings for Langley-Aldergrove and Cloverdale-Langley on Monday, Oct. 5 and Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Planning a future that will see seniors able to age in place, maintain their independence, participating and contributing in our community is the focus of the meetings.

The schedule calls for a wide range of issues to be debated — among them, pension and income security to ensure that seniors are not dropping below the poverty line, increased housing options for aging in place, better transportation and improved medical supports such as home care, and assistance with extend health benefits – vision and hearing, dental, cost of medical supplies and mobility aids.

The first meeting will focus on the riding of Langley-Aldergrove. It will take place Monday, Oct. 5 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Aldergrove Legion, 26607 Fraser Hwy.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, candidates for the riding of Cloverdale-Langley City will meet at the Langley Senior Resources Centre, 20605 51B Ave. from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The meetings are sponsored by several senior organizations in Langley, including Aldergrove Legion Branch 265, Brookswood Senior Citizens (BCOAP Branch 132), Langley Seniors Community Action Table, Langley Senior Resources Society, National Association of Federal Retirees, Fraser Valley West Branch, Stepping Stone Community Services and Triple A Senior Housing.

Both ridings are new and boundaries have changed for this election.  For information about which riding a voter is in, how to register and information on advanced polls, visit www.elections.ca.

To find out if you are on the voters list visit https://ereg.elections.ca/.  Deadline for voter registration is Tuesday, Oct. 13 and election day is Oct. 19.

In addition to the two debates focused on seniors issues, the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce is also hosting a pair of all-candidate meetings. The first, for candidates in the Cloverdale-Langley City riding, takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. It will take place at the Langley campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, 20901 Langley Bypass.

The second event — for the Langley-Aldergrove riding— will be held the following evening, Thursday, Oct. 8, from 7-9 p.m. at the Fraser River Presentation Theatre, on the fourth floor of the Township of Langley Civic Facility at 20338 65 Ave.
