H.D. Stafford Middle School was evacuated before the afternoon bell when a fire broke out in one of the classrooms Tuesday.

A charging cart that was being used to charge several laptop computers caught fire, said Langley City fire chief Rory Thompson.

It’s not known if there was a power surge or some sort of wiring issue, but he said the cart actively burned and all the laptops on it were completely destroyed by the time firefighters arrived.

No students were injured but two staff members were treated for smoke inhalation, said Thompson.

He said he didn’t know if anyone was in the classroom when the fire broke out.

The fire filled the classroom with smoke, which spread to other parts of the school.

The City fire rescue crew has placed fans around the school to blow the smoke outside.
