If you were caught speeding through the school zone at James Kennedy Elementary last Wednesday (April 4), you might have been given a ticket by a Grade 6 student.
With hand-drawn signs asking drivers to slow down, several Grade 5 and 6 students worked with the police to hand out speeding tickets for the day.
“We wanted to remind the public that we are still stepping up enforcement around school zones and with the children here, it reminds drivers why driving safe is so important,” said Langley RCMP Const. Steven Braid.
“The children are our future.”
Braid came up with the idea because he thought it was important to remind drivers who speeding and careless driving can impact.
And the students get an opportunity to work with the police and learn lessons around speeding.
The students were eager to hand out tickets, and they even got to sit in the patrol car and find out what goes into writing up a speeding ticket.
One of the first victims of the day was a young man in a sports car, with a radar detector on the dash.
“We are out there all the time,” said Braid.
