Surrey RCMP took a bank robbery suspect into custody Thursday after he was spotted by a film crew nearby.

The robbery took place Aug. 18 at about 12:35 p.m., when a man allegedly held up a bank in the 17700 block of 56th Avenue, said Cpl. Scotty Schumann of the Surrey RCMP.

The first officers on the scene got a description of the suspect and broadcast it to other officers.

Some nearby police were providing security and traffic control for a film crew, and they were able to halt the filming to look for the suspect.

One officer contacted the crew and asked them to be on the lookout for the suspect, as well.

Almost instantly, a member of the crew spotted a man matching the description of the robber and reported back to the officer, said Schumann.

That officer found and arrested the suspect without incident.

Jeffry Ozolins, a 32-year-old of no fixed address, has been charged with robbery and remains in custody.

“Thankfully no persons were injured during this incident,” said Schumann. “But thanks to the film crew with a sharp eye, and the fast acting officer, this arrest was made in short order.”
