A home on the Kwantlen First Nation reserve on MacMillan Island burned on July 4, but the occupants got out safely.
The fire was first reported to Langley Township firefighters as a possible brush fire, said assistant chief Bruce Ferguson.
The first firefighters who arrived at the scene, near the former Albion Ferry dock, couldn’t see much other than a bit of smoke coming from the nearby trees.
They were about to head into the brush when a woman ran out and told them a house was on fire, with two possible occupants.
The father and son living in the house are accounted for and were not harmed, Ferguson said.
Firefighters spent much of the afternoon dousing the blaze.
The house was an older building, constructed on cinder blocks. It was largely destroyed by the fire, Ferguson said.
Fire crews had not yet begun to determine how the fire started on Monday afternoon.
Friends of the residents, identified as Geoff Antone and his adult son, were fundraising to help them replace their belongings. The family did not have contents insurance for their home. A fundraiser has been started online at www.gofundme.com/2crtfy4.
