A cold wind and drizzling rain got the 102nd Aldergrove Fair Days off to a chilly start on Saturday morning, but as the day warmed up the crowds grew and the smiles broadened.

It actually started out well with the Fair's Car Show and Shine on the Friday evening, July 18, which enjoyed both great weather and great crowds.

The parade officially got the events started on Saturday morning. The route was longer this year as it travelled from downtown Fraser Highway then south on 272nd and west of 29 Avenue, to bring the parade entrants to the site of the Aldergrove Fair at the high school and community centre and adjacent parklands.

There were so many competitions to take in, from the homegrown exhibits at the Aldergrove Agricultural Association Fair inside the Kinsmen Community Centre, to the Fast Draw Championships in a fenced-off area of the park. Kenny Hess, country singer and founder of the Rockin' River Music Festival in Mission, was the winner of the "celebrity shootout" section of the Canadian Fast Draw Championships at the Aldergrove Fair on Saturday, July 19.

There were also Riding Lawnmower Races on the bicycle track, and the Antique Tractor Pull in the Athletic Park also featured a junior event in the form of Garden Tractor Pulls.

A new addition this year was the Zucchini Racing Luge, which towered 30 feet above ground. Youngsters and the young at heart created and decorated their own zucchini race cars, which then were sent hurtling down the luge track.

The Chili Cook-off featured brisk competition between local chefs, with the judges' favorite once again the team from the Aldergrove Legion.

The main stage featured a wide range of local talents performing bluegrass, country and rock tunes, and the ever-popular midway kept the thrills going with their rides.

The official opening ceremonies also acknowledged the great volunteers and top farmers in the community.

Bill Ede of Aldergrove soccer received the Hilda Reddick community service award for his contributions to the creation of new sports field in Aldergrove, and Rachel Fitz, 11, received the Bev Gold youth community service award for her "Ride for Rwanda" fundraiser held earlier this year.

Rob Wein of Clearview Horticultural Products in Aldergrove received the Aldergrove Agricultural Association's Centennial trophy on behalf of his family at the Aldergrove Fair on Saturday, July 19. Founded in 1970, the family business mainly specializes in growing clematis varieties for the gardening market. Rob's grandfather, Fred Wein, remains involved in the business as does Rob's father, Rob Sr., however, young Rob is stepping up to keep the business going and growing. After graduating from university with relevant degrees, young Rob has worked full-time at the business for the past four years and has applied his knowledge and skills in eliminating all pesticides use on the farm.
