Electric vehicles get green light to travel in HOV lanes.

More than 1,000 electrical vehicle owners have signed up to receive decals permitting them to travel in HOV lanes throughout the province, the government says.

Most of the special decals have already been issued, meaning drivers don’t have to meet the occupancy requirements to travel in the high occupancy lanes.

“The response to this program has been fantastic,” said Transportation Minister Todd Stone in a release. Residents are willing to “look for more fuel-efficient transportation options and support our efforts to address climate change."

The decal must be clearly displayed, and placed on the rear bumper or window of the vehicle and be visible at all times.

Eligible vehicles include battery electric, fuel cell and plug-in hybrids.

Vehicles that rely on gas-electric hybrid motors that do not plug into an external source are not eligible.
