The discovery of a pair of guns found on the grounds of a Langley high school was less alarming than it first appeared, RCMP say.
The weapons, two long guns, were discovered in an old car left at D.W. Poppy Secondary, after school hours on the evening of Friday, Oct. 16.
There was no lockdown as the discovery happened after school hours, said Cpl. Holly Largy, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP.
The guns were also fairly old, both had trigger locks on them, and there was no ammunition anywhere in the car.
Police traced back the ownership of the car and the guns, and it appears the car was an old clunker left there for ICBC training of automotive students.
The guns had apparently been left in the car by mistake. The guns’ owner spoke to the RCMP over the weekend, Largy said.
Police are still looking into the matter, but no charges have been laid as of Monday morning.
School principal Balan Moorthy reiterated a lockdown was not necessary during Friday’s incident, and offered assurance that the school did resume as normal Monday morning.
“It was unfortunately a misrepresentation of what had actually happened,” Moorthy said of the initial reports on social media that have apparently “upset” and “worried” many parent.
“Everything is totally fine,” he concluded.
