Langley RCMP have impounded 47 cars for excessive speeding along 16 Avenue this year.
By provincial law, any vehicle clocked at 41 km/h or more above the speed limit must be impounded for seven days.
An average of more than two people per week have been caught speeding down the road at 101 km/h or more, including one driver who was doing 180 km/h.
The 47 impounded vehicles make up the majority of the 69 impoundments in Langley since Jan. 1.
Cpl. Alex Mulvihill, who heads the detachment’s traffic services division, said these numbers are “definitely up” from last year, due in part to an increased concentration of enforcement along the treacherous stretch.
“Our last two fatal collisions here have been down on 16th Ave.,” she said. “That'll take the members back to any area where you have a fatal collision to try to figure out why there, as opposed to anywhere else.”
Mulvihill said that excessive speeders end up, on average, $800 poorer after paying the ticket, towing and storage fees.
Across B.C., there are four levels of fines levied against caught speeders:
1 km/h - 20 km/h over posted limit: $138
21 km/h - 40 km/h over posted limit: $196
41 km/h - 60 km/h over posted limit $368
61-plus km/h over posted limit: $483
“[Excessive speeders] really need to slow down,” said Mulvihill. “When you get speeds that are double over (the limit), you're not just talking a collision, you're talking a catastrophic collision. The reaction time, they don't have it. There's zero reaction time.”
