The 12-year-old boy who was critically injured during a high-speed car chase through Brookswood last week remains in hospital in serious condition, say police.

The boy is listed as stable and was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday. But he has several surgeries coming up, said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy.

The two Langley men arrested following the chase, aged 52 and 33, were released from custody shortly after the incident.

Langley Mounties along with the Integrated Collision Reconstruction Team (ICRT) are still investigating. That means laying criminal charges will take time, explained Largy.

RCMP were not involved in the chase, which began when two Langley men allegedly stole tools from a construction site in the 21100 block of 32 Ave. on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

They were seen fleeing in a Mazda Tribute SUV, pursued by a man in a Ford pickup who was allegedly from the construction site and saw them take the tools.

Police said the chase continued along 40 Avenue when both vehicles failed to stop at a stop sign, made a left turn at 204 Street and one of the vehicle’s struck the 12-year-old cyclist before crashing into a fence around 6 p.m.

The cyclist was thrown several feet.

The Ford pickup rear-ended the Tribute and the occupants of the Tribute ran on foot.

An off-duty police officer who was jogging in the area heard the collision and people yelling and was able to arrest one of the males running from the scene.

Police Dog Services located the second suspect from the Tribute hiding in a backyard nearby.

Some Brookswood residents say there has been a large increase in property theft concentrated in their area.
