Dave Hall has stepped down as a Langley City councillor after seven years as he battles cancer.

Langley City Councillor Dave Hall stepped down Monday night due to an ongoing battle with cancer.

Hall, who has served seven years at the City and nine years on the Langley School Board including a term as board chair, said in a press release that he found it increasingly difficult to devote time to both council duties and family. He thanked his supporters both past and present.

“He asked to keep it under wraps until today,” Mayor Ted Schaffer said during the Monday council meeting.

Hall has often served as a kind of unofficial opposition on the City council, where he frequently disagreed with his fellow councillors.

“We didn’t always see eye to eye, but we do care for one another,” said Schaffer.

“He did give to this community, he was passionate about this community, and he absolutely loved this community,” Schaffer said of the departing councillor.

A byelection will be held for Hall’s seat, with an election officer appointed in mid-December and the vote likely scheduled for February.
