Between 1,500 and 1,800 volunteers are needed for a four-day event this September in Langley.

Not only do the Langleys boast quality sporting venues to welcome close to 4,000 BC Seniors Games athletes in September, the communities also have a long history of strong volunteerism.

Langley is welcoming more than 3,500 athletes ages 55-plus from across the province for the multi-sport competition taking place Sept. 9-13.

And the Games Organizing Committee is confident that upwards of 2,000 volunteers will step forward to ensure that a quality three days of sport is presented to visitors.

â€œWe are in need of between 1,500 and 1,800 volunteers,” says Langley Games president Milt Kruger said. “Opportunities exist for helping with any of the 25 sports in addition to the support areas.”

Currently there is an urgent need for volunteer sport chairs for table tennis, whist, cribbage, and carpet bowling.

These volunteers will be responsible for coordinating the schedule of competition and overseeing the venue for the week of competition.

The promotions directorate is actively seeking volunteers with an interest in photography as well as those with interests in website and social media updating.

As the schedule for the Games is Sept.  9-13, there may be an opportunity for local teams to volunteer together prior to their own competition schedules becoming too intense.

“Local athletes and teams are a great source for officials, help setting up for competitions or equipment management,” explained Games vice-president Michael Jackstien. “Similarly, because the Games will take place early in the month, it’s hoped that students looking for volunteer hours will consider registering for a shift or two of experience.”

To volunteer with the Games, there are three ways to register.

In person at 101-20560 Fraser Hwy, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
