* MY Tween and ME

Discover the full potential of your relationship with your pre-teen. You and your child have come through the demanding early years. Now you realize there are new challenges ahead. This 8-session parenting program works to help parents from diverse family backgrounds build strong, healthy relationships with their tweens. Parents will be given the confidence and My Tween and Me will open your eyes to all the ways you can continue to influence the choices, values, and goals that your children aged 7-12 make. It will also give you insight on how to help prevent the early use of drugs, alcohol and other risky behaviour – by helping you discover your own skills and strengths as a parent.

Build lasting connections with your tween that will help them to make safe healthy choices now and during their teen years.

Langley Parents as Partners in Learning presents the workshop, in partnership with Langley's Middle Childhood Matters Program.

Runs Thursdays, Jan. 22 to March 12 at Yorkson Creek Middle School, 20688 84th Ave. * Please note that on January 22 and March 12 your Tween is in invited to join you at the session.

• Discipline that Doesn’t Divide

According to Dr. Gordon Neufeld many of the prevailing discipline practices that parents use today prevent or erode healthy attachment with our children. We will outline seven principles of discipline that promote attachment between the parent and child and that are developmentally appropriate. We can indeed help bring order to our children’s behaviour without damaging the relationship. We will give practical suggestions and examples.

at R.E. Mountain Secondary, 7755 202A Street. 7-9 p.m. on Jan. 25

• Supporting My Child with Anxiety

— What is anxiety?

 â€” Why my child? — Why now?

— Is my child’s anxiety normal?

— Is this an anxiety disorder? When should I seek professional help?

— What could they do?

Most importantly, what can I do as a parent to help my child?

This presentation will assist parents in gaining deeper understanding of their child’s experience of anxiety and to equip them with the concrete strategies and resources that will assist them in supporting their anxious child. We will also discuss ways that parents who “worry about their child’s worrying” can take care of themselves in the process.

Thursday, February 26, 7:00 - 9:00 pm at the Langley School Board Office 4875 222nd St.

Michelle Srdanovic, M.A., R.C.C., has over 15 years of experience working with families, couples, and children, using expressive, cognitive-behavioural, and narrative therapeutic practices. Michelle is a proponent of the use of play therapy with young children.
