Homelessness Action Week is Oct. 7-13, and the Langley Grassroots Homeless Advocacy Table is taking part in activities to mark the occasion.

The Advocacy Table, made up of community organizations, is hosting Langley’s first homeless walk on Friday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. to build awareness about Langley’s homeless population.

A member of the Langley Grassroots Homeless Advocacy Table and Lookout Society, Susan Keeping, said the table plans to take more action with the homeless community, starting with the walk.

“We invite everybody that can possibly come. It’s a good opportunity for people to talk to homeless people because they will be in attendance as well.

“Part of building awareness is removing the stigma and barriers involved. Often we don’t see the human aspect, we just see the problems and the negative impacts.”

Participants will walk between Fraser Highway and Duncan Way on Glover Road for 20 minutes. After the walk, participants are invited for light snacks at the Lookout Housing and Health Society at #102-5714 Glover Rd.

“The intention is to create a positive way to communicate,” said Keeping. “We need to create positive collaboration together to reduce homelessness.”

Homelessness Action Week is an annual event throughout Greater Vancouver that aims to bring awareness and understanding to the issue of homelessness.
