A Langley man has taken it upon himself to deliver Christmas spirit this season by hosting a hamper drive.

Doug Canning decided he wanted to help out the community this year, and is doing so by working with the Surrey Christmas Bureau to deliver food and gifts to four families in need.

After spreading the word to his friends and family, Canning rounded up 44 local families who contributed food, clothing, and gifts to sponsor hampers for four single mothers with children living in Surrey.

“I came up with the idea, rather than sponsor one family ourselves, why don’t I contact a bunch of people,” said Canning.

“I want to make it bigger every year so we increase the amount of families that participate and the amount of families we can help out for Christmas.”

Canning said he rounded up most of the donations from his clients and co-workers at the Investors Group, people he golfs with, and through social media.

“I was dedicating a lot of time to it, but I know I could get it up to 60-80 families next year. It is a lot of work to do it.”

Canning was impressed at the response from his friends and family, and said everyone “jumped on it,” and many “over-contributed,” to his campaign.

Despite receiving a lot of support, Canning said his campaign could still use more food donations.

To donate to the hamper drive, Doug can be contacted at 604-376-9957.

This weekend, Canning is hosting a gift wrapping party for the families who donated, and afterwards, Canning will hand deliver the gifts to the recipients, accompanied by Santa Claus.
